Kids' Haircuts in North Palm Beach: A Parent's Guide
The right time of day, what to say beforehand, and how to make a first haircut go smoothly.
A kid's haircut goes one of two ways, and most of what decides it happens before you walk in the door. Our barbers are dads and uncles — we've seen every version of the wiggle, the squirm, and the full meltdown. Here's what actually helps.
Timing is most of the battle
Bring them in rested and fed. A mid-morning slot beats late afternoon almost every time, and anything that collides with a nap is a coin flip. Saturday is our busiest day, so if your child does better without a room full of strangers, a weekday morning right after we open at 9 is the quietest the shop gets.
Tell them what's going to happen
The clippers are the scary part — the sound and the vibration, not the haircut. Explain it beforehand in plain words: a buzzing that tickles, scissors near the ears, a cape that feels like a blanket. Kids handle things they were warned about far better than surprises. If your child is nervous, say so when you arrive and we'll let them hold the clippers, turned off, before they go near their head.
First haircut?
Tell us — it matters. We take a photo and send you home with a certificate and a clipping, on the house. It's also worth sitting them on your lap for the first one; there's no rule that says they have to sit in the chair alone, and a lot of first cuts go better in a parent's arms.
What helps in the chair
- A phone or tablet is not cheating — a distracted kid is a still kid
- Sit where they can see you in the mirror, not behind them
- Skip the running commentary; a calm parent makes a calm kid
- Don't promise "it'll be quick" — promise a treat afterward instead
- If it goes badly, we stop. A half-decent cut and a kid who'll come back beats a perfect cut and a kid who won't
Between cuts
Most kids look sharp for about four weeks, a bit less if they're in a short fade. School photo coming up? Book about a week out, not the day before — a cut settles and looks its most natural after five or six days.
