Back-to-School Haircuts in North Palm Beach

Palm Beach County schools go back in mid-August, which means the two weeks before are the busiest stretch of our summer. Every parent has the same idea on the same weekend. A little planning gets you a better slot and a better haircut.

Book the week before, not the weekend before

The Saturday right before school starts is the single most booked day we have all August. Come the weekend before that, or on a weekday morning — we open at 9 Monday through Friday. You'll get a barber who isn't working against a waiting room, which is exactly what you want for a kid who needs a minute to settle in.

Five days out is the sweet spot

A fresh cut looks its most natural about five or six days in. The lines soften slightly, the top sits the way it's going to sit, and it stops looking like it happened yesterday. Cutting it the night before day one is how you end up with first-day photos that look a little too sharp.

Ask for a cut that survives to week three

A skin fade looks incredible for ten days and then needs you back. If you'd rather not be in our chair every other week during the school year, ask for a taper instead — it grows out clean and buys you three to four weeks. Same idea on top: a little more length hides growth better than a very short crop.

Worth knowing

• Kids cuts (12 and under) are $28 and take about 30 minutes
• Picture day usually lands a few weeks in — book that one about a week out too
• Two kids? Ask for back-to-back slots rather than walking in and waiting
• Teenagers: bring a photo. It settles the argument faster than either of you describing it
